Anita's visit and the science project

The next several posts are on Anita's Birthday visit. Since we moved to SD and well really before that, Anita and I have tried to get together for our birthday's since mine is the 9th and hers the 10th. This time it just happened that we were going to Disneyland for a symposium that Brent had to work at. So we just planned our Disney trip with a Birthday trip. This was the first and last part of the San Diego part of it. The science project. Anita and I got talking one day for some reason about fun kids science projects. I told her about some we had done with the Walker boys and she was telling me about cooking an egg on the side walk project she had to do for school. She said she knew a project where you could make a raw egg bounce. Well I couldn't pass up the opportunity to do a science project like that so we did it. Here's the how it went. We soaked an egg in vinegar just enough to cover it for 24 hours. Then you empty the vinegar and add the same amount back in for 5 days. We did all that and let it sit while we went to DL.

This was after 24 hours but before the second soak.

This is the second soak in vinegar.

This was after we got back from DL and were about to see if it could bounce.

Getting the eggs out of the cups.

Rinsing the egg and vinegar off.

Examination of the eggs after the soak and before the test.

The eggs before the bounce test!

Egg Experiment Explanation

Emma was cracking us up during the last video because off camera she was scratching something down yonder! I accidentally cut Anita off of talking in the last video too. Sorry Sis! In the end the raw uncooked egg did bounce but only at a small drop. When the drop was too high it broke. I kinda thought the broken white part of the egg looked like something unpleasant. I won't write it in here but anyone trying not to have a baby will probably get it. This was a fun test especially because we went to DL in the middle of it. The bubbles that were created were pretty cool and seeing and feeling the shell go mushy was pretty cool too. Try it out and see what results you get. I think one of the next ones will have to be sucking a hard boiled egg into a jar with the lip smaller than the egg. I've seen it done on youtube but I've never tried it before. Isn't science a blast or is it a "smash"?
