San Diego Helping Hands Day

The day after I flew home, (April 28, 2012) from being with my Mom, I had to get back to work on this huge project.  Our Church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) holds an annual work day to benefit the community.  (Check out this website to tell you more) I was in charge of just one of our community projects.  This project was to help with erosion problems.  We were asked to move 8 tons of dirt and gravel onto this horse trail to help stop the eroding dirt.  Later the city would come in to put bracers up to finish our work but we were to lay the foundation.  The pictures don't show it well but we were at a huge incline before our trail even got started.

This was one of those things that I had been working on for several weeks and the more I worked on it the more frustrated I became.  After much prayer on the matter I came to a conclusion.  I must follow the Spirit.  I must follow the Spirit!  It was exactly what I needed to do as a matter of fact.  I was led one day to call my director and meet at the site at a certain time.  There we incidentally met up with a city worker who knew all the details of our project.  He was just there spraying down the weeds to kill them off before we got there and he gave us several ideas.  My director and I felt like I needed a chain gang going down the incline.  Right after I met with him I met with a man in my Ward who was going to help me with our project while I was away.  He agreed with the chain gang, gave me a few tips on how to handle certain people and treated me like I was in charge even though he has so many more years experience!  Next I had to fly to Vegas to be with my mom.  The very first night I was there I was talking over the plan with my Dad where again I was led by the spirit to tell him in detail what my ideas were.  He reconfirmed the fact that I was in the right direction and led me to one more idea.  I needed to have a chain gang going up and down with buckets!!  The buckets going down part way full and the buckets coming back up empty.    One night while still in Las Vegas I got really anxious about the whole thing.  I called Brent and we talked for a long time about it.  Looking back I realize that the Spirit led me to talk to all five of these men at different times and all of them were led by the Spirit to teach me and lead me.

The morning started out really slow and really sort of depressing.  We were supposed to receive a certain number of supplies from the city and they weren't showing and they weren't showing.  People were doing things they way they saw fit and it was starting to really get to me.  I had a plan!!!!!!!  I knew what direction we needed to go!  Then the city truck finally showed up and I put a stop to all the tom foolery and started all the work again with my plan except it wasn't my plan....it was the Lord's!  Sure enough we did a double chain gang with the kids on the side of the empty buckets going up and the adults who could hold some weight on the side of the fuller buckets.  We dumped each bucket into a wheel barrow and that got wheeled down to where we needed it to go.  We finished an hour early.  Everyone was sweaty and tired but we had 75 volunteers there with us!  My directors director showed up and was blown away with my leadership but more importantly the teamwork.  I was and am humbled by this experience.  It takes a mighty powerful amount of work to move 8 tons of anything but when you invite the Spirit in, it gets done with smiles and laughter and friendship!
