Summer so far

Beach sand, perfect tans. Day walks, night talks.
Sleepless nights, pillow fights,
and spending it with those who matter most.

I think this might be the first summer that my daughter and I have spent like girl friends instead of bored out of our gord, I've seen to much of you today, mother and daughter. I owe a ton of it to our ward for organizing times to get together with others and just plain...time to get out of the house. Another part (there's three) of it is that she is getting older and it's easier for her and I to do more grown up things together because of her age. The last and most important part is that she's just a really cool kid and I love hanging out with her! Sooooo this post is about some of the stuff we've been doing!

#1 - The Splash Park This is so GREAT!!!! Who knew San Diego has a splash park, that you don't have to pay for, that's close (somewhat) to our house? (it may be in an HOA and you may get in trouble for being there without someone who lives there) This was pretty darn fun. Emma went and played in the water, I sat in the shade and had great conversation and all in all we both had a fun time. Not necessarily together but that's ok it's not always about being together. After we got home Emma had a rough time. She got pretty sick and spent the rest of the day in bed. She gets sun stroke really easily and I guess because I was so lost in conversation I didn't remember to get her enough water. I really think though that it was the weekend previous as well. She hadn't felt well for a few days and it must have just carried over. Tuesday morning she got up and was fine! It's always once that I apparently have to learn my lesson about getting enough liquids into her. My poor girl, when will her mother learn?

#2 The San Diego Public Library This picture was taken at the Rancho Bernardo Library. We missed a pet exhibit at our library closest to us because it was the day we were leaving for Las Vegas and to get Emma to not be upset with me I promised her we would find it at another location. It was pretty darn fun too. We sat on the floor together and saw animals from all over the world like the hedgehog that was burrowed into this poor girls arm. We got to pet that one and I gotta say, it was really cool. It looks like it would be furry but it's really like a bunch a little tiny quartered and sharpened pencils all over his back. Another one of our favorites was the possum. Now I know you're thinking that there is no way the possum could have been one of our favorites because those are some scary creatures but it really was. The girl in the picture with the hedgehog was holding the possum like a baby on her shoulder and it seemed really cuddly. I know it has about 50 razor sharp teeth (Thank you library zoo lady) and could take me out but none the less it was pretty cool to see one in person and not just hear it hissing at me from the bushes outside our previous apartment! The library time is pretty cool too because Emma and I usually go right after piano lessons and it's just an hour or so of time together with no pressures. Besides that we really love hanging at the library and looking at cool books or weird books or whatever we decide to pull off the shelves!

#3 The Next Food Network Star Some of you may laugh and that's ok but Emma and I are really into this show. I let her stay up until 10 p.m. on Sunday nights so that we can watch this show together. I don't know how it got started but I figured it was the summer and who cares right? So now that we've been watching it for a few weeks both Emma and I have our favorites and our not so favorites. We think the same person is going to win and that is this (pictured here) very fun and in Emma's words very pretty, Aartie! Her show would be Aartie Paartie! She's our favorite and our pick for the winner. We also like this guy named Brad and we both really really really really really don't like this girl named Aria and we hoped she gets kicked off this next week. This whole "watching the show together" thing has been kind of a big deal for Emma and I think for me as well. There is something we share in common and I have found this cooking connection that I can talk to my daughter about without making her feel any other pressures otherwise. I think that's so important to be able to share at least one "like" together. I pray there are more like this in the future!

#4 Mornings in General When Emma was little she would get out of bed as the sun came up, climb into my bed, cuddle with me and then fall back asleep. Now our mornings are a little different. Emma's learned that summer means Mom gets to sleep in. Which translates to....get your own breakfast, which also translates to....leave your mother alone until she wakes on her own! This picture was taken last Saturday at our Pioneer Day "fun run". Those two words together don't translate well with me but they do with Brent. He took off on a 5K run (with the rest of the runners from our stake) at about 8:30 and returned a short 27 minutes later to unfortunately no one cheering him on because I missed him coming around the bend. Sorry Hunny I promise I was watching for you and just didn't see you because you know I would have been there to cheer you in...you're my hero! Anyway back to the morning topic, this was an early one for me and typically I'm not up at the earliest before eight. Sometimes life dictates it however and then sometimes I get up on whim and get things done around the house and always during the school year I'm up at the crack of dawn but like I said before summertime means the mornings are mine! Oh ya one more thought for this one. Emma's in my jacket in this pictures because our mornings have been quite chilly. Not ice on the sidewalks chilly but enough for a windbreaker. I love that it looks more like a poncho on her than a jacket. SO cute! Oh ya just one more thought I swear.... her bangs can finally go all the way back into a high pony tail! YA! (Maybe a little anticlimactic for some but it was a big thing in our house!)

#5 I'm So Glad When Daddy Comes Home I really do have a great time with Emma and spending time together has been so great this summer BUT it's always nice to be able to (maybe pawn her off isn't the right phrase here) let her have some quality time with Daddy so that I can get a little breather. I've noticed that it's not every day that I feel this way and it never was but even now it's less that it ever has been. This is her and Dad playing Frisbee together. Brent taught her how to throw it and she was still throwing it crazy when I came out to play too but Brent said it was way better than at first. The leg thing CRACKS ME UP! She does this with the Wii as well. Whenever one part moves I guess they all have too. So sweet, I have the best kid in the world.

#6 Lets go to the Movies! The Regal Theaters have been showing free
movies since 1991 (almost typed 1919! Hehe opps!) We used to go when Emma was little and we lived in Las Vegas. Hadn't been to a free movie since then. I kinda forgot what it was like; getting there early to find a parking spot and a seat in the theater, tons of people, kids coming out of school buses all wearing the same field trip t-shirts, parents yelling at the kid to stay with them, some little joy of wonder kicking the back of your chair, the kid next to the little joy of wonder repeating all the lines to the movie because after all they are free so the theater isn't going to play something new because they can still make money on the new stuff, all the kids in the same t-shirts lined up in the bathroom waiting to use the jon which in turn means a long line to use the jon, and yet all of this doesn't seem to matter because for some reason the word FREE takes over all the annoying stuff and flutters in this excited vibe throughout the theater meaning you just can't seem to stay irritated but instead end up breathing it in, forgetting all your woes and laughing right along with the little joy of wonder that is still kicking the back of your chair. No really it is fun. We meet up with friends from our ward and chow down on whatever was cheep food that morning and have a blast. The best part of this all is that I'm sitting next to my best girl and then for days after we repeat all the funny lines that we heard in the movie we've seen fifteen times before we saw it in the theater!

The best part of all of this is that it isn't even August yet! It will be in a couple more days and there is a ton of stuff planned for then too but I just had to post about SOME of the stuff we're doing. This summer has been so great and I can't wait to do the rest. I wonder if I'll be ready for Emma to go back to school when the time comes or if I'll feel like I need more time?
