Wood is so friendly (and it's fun to play with power tools)

Our bedroom TV sits too low to watch while in bed. I know others don't like to have a TV in the bedroom but for a few different reasons I do. Mostly I just don't like having feet stick up in the middle of the screen while I am trying to watch History Detectives! For awhile I had been devising a plan to make this shelf that would fit under the TV but I hadn't quite figured it out until I was at my parent's place and bingo I saw my dad's biscuit joiner and the idea was complete. So I took this never been used before head board and chopped it up with the chop saw which was really pretty amusing, I'm sure, to watch me figure out how to turn the wood to make it work to cut. Then I took the old layers off and sanded it down really good and then glued it all together using the joiner. No nails, no screws! After that we (Brent helped me anytime I asked for his help) stained it and I was so impressed with the way it matched the dresser. Especially since I was pretty sure this wood was Cherry and my dresser is Pine. After that we sealed it a bunch of times and brought it into the house. I am pretty impressed with the way it turned out. The design most likely would have been just a bit different if I had had the proper tools to work with but again not bad for a Chop Saw, Biscuit Joiner, and a Sander. I had so much fun being in the garage with me and the wood and the saw dust and my quiet thoughts and my design that had never really come out on paper but was stuck in my head. It's energizing to be able to work with your hands and the talents the Lord gave you and remember things from Wood Shop in High School. It's enabling to be able to create in a manner that most women would not. I have never considered myself very creative in the way that most women are and for me that has been a bit of a struggle to understand why I am different that way. With this however I don't mind being different. Wood is warm and friendly. It is giving and understanding. It's natural and beautiful and I think I have a very personal relationship with wood. That last statement sounds weird but I'm leaving it! I love this talent and someday hope to be able to do more with it. It runs in the family and it feels like it runs through my veins sometimes. Sometimes I feel like I have to reach out and run my hand over a beautiful piece of furniture! Ahhhh wood. Isn't it wonderful!
